Art collective SPACEFILLER’s Petri Dish installation is one part whimsical arcade game, one part secret laboratory experiment. Viewers play God by tapping buttons that control the life and death of algorithmically generated organisms. Too little interaction, and the creatures remain dull and stagnant. Too much prodding, and the creatures reproduce explosively, eventually overcrowding their container and dying.
The installation shifts focus from the simulated creatures to the humans behind the controls. Do we learn from past experiences when our actions kill the environment? Or do we repeat destructive behavior for curiosity or sadistic pleasure? Petri Dish allows you to playfully seek your own answers through this interactive “experiment.”
